The Prevention of an Aphthous Ulcer

An aphthous ulcer is the clinical name for the common mouth ulcer, the open sore or abrasion that appears on the mucus membrane in the interior of the mouth. This ugly looking white and yellow sore can emit a sharp and continually uncomfortable pain that can persist for several days. While the most common cause of an aphthous ulcer is a reaction to acidic food, it is also caused by sports related injuries.

Now, contact sports will usually include a mouthpiece to protect the teeth from getting knocked loose or out altogether and from the jaw breaking. They also keep a person from biting the interior of one’s own mouth that is also a common reason behind aphthous ulcer from making an unwelcome appearance.

Now, one does not have to take part in a contact sport in order to bite one’s own mouth unexpectedly. Many times, taking part in any cardio activity while not in high cardio shape can result in involuntary biting. What occurs is as one is gasping for breath in order to get oxygen into one’s lungs (an out of shape person’s heart will not be able to provide proper oxygen under a high impact cardio activity) that one will end up literally accidentally chewing the inside of his mouth. No, he will not tear open his own mouth to the point stitches will be necessary, but he will end up creating abrasions that will lead to an aphthous ulcer.

The easiest way to avoid such a situation that leads to aphthous cancer is to do one’s best to remain consciously aware to keep one’s mouth closed and try to breathe mainly through the nose. If the mouth is not opening and closing trying to get air in, there will not be a risk of biting oneself. While this is not a flawless prevention, it does help a lot.
